Colombo. Street scene. Photographer: Scowen and Company, Charles T.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
Street scene in the Pettah, with the Cayman Gate in the right foreground. Other copies of this photograph are signed by the photographer, and it is likely that the other Ceylon photographs in this album are also the work of Scowen & Co.
Subjects = street scenes
Location = Ceylon; Colombo; Sri Lanka; Western Province
Photograph, from an album of 62 views of India and Ceylon, of a street scene in the Pettah, in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, taken by Charles T. Scowen & Co. in the 1880s. The Cayman Gate is in the right foreground and is so-called because crocodiles (caymans) would gather at the gate to eat the thrown out leftovers of the Dutch Fort which once stood on this site and gives the commercial district of the city its name. The bell tower also dates from the Dutch colonial period and was once used to tell drinkers at nearby taverns that 'time' had been called. In this district the Pettah Mosque, with its red and white decoration and the Pettah Clocktower are also situated.
