Subjects = barracks; military (general); military facilities
Location = Ceylon; Colombo; Sri Lanka; Western Province
Photograph of the Fort and lake at Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, taken in the 1880s by Scowen & Co, from an album of 62 views of India and Ceylon. This view looks south towards the Galle Face Promenade (so-called because it faced in the direction of Galle), with the barracks in the foreground and the Galle Face Cemetery on the farther side of the lake. The original 17th century Dutch Fort no longer exists but the district which covers the site of the old city at the heart of Colombo is still called The Fort today. The district is where the business and commercial centre is located as well as the main institutions of the Republic such as the senate and the residence of the President.
