Potters, Tippera. Photographer: Shamarandra Chandra Deb Barman
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Ethnographical Photography
Group of potters at work in front of thatched houses with characteristic Bengali curved eaves. The photograph is not signed but is probably by Shamarandra Chandra Deb Barman, a member of the ruling family of Tripura and a keen amateur photographer. Several other examples of his work can be found in other parts of the Curzon Collection, mounted on similar grey card (see Photo 430/73 (31-36)).
Shamarandra Chandra Deb Barman, Bara Thakur of Tripura, was a distinguished amateur photographer in the 1890s, winning medals at the exhibitions of the Photographic Society of India at Calcutta, and from the Midlands Camera Club, Birmingham in 1893. His father, the ruler of Tripura, had taken up photography in the very early days of the medium and his son was involved in the medium from childhood. For an account of his work, see 'Indian Photographers and their Work. No. 2. H. H. The Bara Thakoor Bahadoor of Tippera' (The Practical Photographer, vol. 6, no. 65. May 1895, pp. 168-171).
