Photograph of a jungle path in Sri Lanka taken by A.W.A Plâté & Co in c.1900. Although Sri Lanka is small in size, its variation in climate and topography has given rise to a striking variety of forest types and diverse fauna and flora. T.H.Holdich wrote in the Imperial Gazeteer of India, 'Except for the clearings of plantation and agriculture the whole island is jungle-covered. The northern half of it is a vast primeval forest, traversed by the great high road of the north, with its branches to the ports of the eastern coast. Forests have closed in, around, and over the site of the great Buddhist cities, which are as yet but partially restored. Ancient images of Buddha sit in eternal contemplation of the recurrent processes of decay and regeneration in the shadowy depths of the ever-thickening jungle.' The photo studio of A.W.A Plâté & Co, set up in Colombo, was the most successful in the island after Skeen & Co, and continues to the present day.
