Genre: Architectural Photography
Seen here before the construction of the spire (completed in 1865). The church was consecrated by Bishop Harding on 7 July 1858. Designed by the city engineer Henry Conybeare, building began in 1847: 'The construction of the church was a milestone in the history of ecclesiastical architecture in India. Until then, churches in the country were built in rubble and brick with a surface finish of smooth chunam or lime plaster. The Afghan Church was the first to be built with local stone - the walls of rubble with an exterior finish of coards Kurla stone with coigns, arches, piers and carvings in beige Porbunder stone. This use of stone set a new trend for church architecture in the country, not only in terms of its aesthetic quality but more importanly, because it required little maintenance in India's hot, humid, and rainy climate.' (Sharada Dwivedi in (ed.) Pauline Rohatghi et al., 'Bombay to Mumbai,' Marg, Bombay, 1997, p. 191).
