Cousens' progress report for the Archaeological Survey of Western India for December 1889 to February 1890 notes that, 'We now entered His Highness the Gaikwad's territory, and, as Patan lay in our way, we halted there from 23rd January to 12th February [1890] and added a few more drawings and photographs to those already made there in January 1887 ... On the south side of the town is the Khan Sarovar, a fine large tank, constructed, like most of the buoldings in the Muhammadan period, chiefly of appropriated materials. Tha rrangement of the inlet and outlet sluices is worthy of note, and a plan, section, elevation, and photos were made. Like most of these ancient buildings it has been allowed to fall into a ruinous state, although it is still used by the town; the accumulation of silt, which is gradually filling it, seems never to be cleared out. When these works were constructed, it would appear that no provision was made for their upkeep and repair...'
