General view from the north-east of the Bavanadhvaja Temple, Sarotra. Photographer: Cousens, Henry
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Reproduced in collotype in Burgess, 'Archaeological Survey of Western India', IX, plate 78 and described, pp. 99-100. Jain temple, largely overgrown.
Cousens describes his visit to Kasara/Kasera in his progress report of the Archaeological Survey of Western India for December 1889 to February 1890: 'About four and a half miles south-west of Roho is the village of Sarotra, beside which stands an interesting old white marble Jaina temple. The principal shrine stands within a closed rectangular court, around the four sides of which, and facing inwards, were 52 small cell shrines; but the back or south corridor, with part of the eastern, has been demolished and cleared away. A portion also of the sculptured walls of the main shrine has also fallen, or has been removed, from the south-west corner. The temple has been thoroughly desecrated, and all its images, of which there must have been at least sixty, have been removed. Photographs and drawings were made of this temple.'
