Group of temples behind the Great Chaumukh Temple in the Khartaravasi Tuk, Satrunjaya. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Described in E. D. Lyon, 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs designed to illustrate the ancient architecture of Western India' (Geneva, 1871): '643. - These two temples are situated inside the Khartavasi enclosure between the door by which it is entered and the great Chaumukh temple. They were built by natives of Ahmedabab who came as Pilgrims to the great festival of the Shrawaks in 1618. Here again is seen the combination of the large flat dome, the arch and the tower or Gopurum, and if the dome had not been so disproportionately large, the effect in the temple to the left of the view would have been by no means displeasing.'
