- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Section of torana rail decorated with carved lions and other creatures, with two sculptured disks (one incomplete) resting on top. Photographed on site, before removal to Calcutta. This section of torana rail can also be seen in print 2240. The complete disk is reproduced in Alexander Cunningham, 'The Stupa of Bharhut' (London, 1879), plate xxv, 4, captioned 'Muga-Pakaya Jataka'; the incomplete disk is reproduced in full at plate xxvi, 2, captioned 'Chhadantiya Jataka'; the torana rail is reproduced at plate viii. Cunningham (pp. 61-62) relates that the Chhadantiya Jataka was 'broken into two pieces at least 150 years ago, when the lower half was carried away to Pathora...The upper half was first found at Bharhut, but the lower half was only discovered 10 months later by Babu Jamna Shankar at Pathora, seven miles distant, where it was in daily use by a washerman, who beat his clothes upon it...'
