Close view of the east entrance to the Mahabodhi Temple, Bodh Gaya, before restoration. Photographer: Peppé, Thomas Fraser
- Scope & Content:
-
'The front of the temple which faces the east is in very bad repair, and large masses come down every rainy season. In a few years the aspect of this side will be entirely changed. The porch in front has now nearly disappeared; only portions of the arch of its roof adheres to the side walls. The peculiarity of this portion is the Lehra or horizontal arch to the third story, and the radiating arches on the second story.' (descriptive notes by T.F. Peppé accompanying photographs, India pub. proc., 18 February 1871, IOR/P/505 p. 1638). India Museum no. 992.
Peppé's photographs of Bodh Gaya were received by the India Office in 1871, but appear to correspond with the series referred to in a meeting of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in August 1865.
