Close view from the mosque court of the Mehtar Mahal, Bijapur. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of the rear of the building showing the richly-carved brackets supporting the balcony windows. India Museum no. 1427. Received from Captain Lyon, 7 February 1871. Duplicate print at Photo 1001 (3185).
536. - On entering the building a staircase will be found inside, by which the visitor can ascend to the upper stories, and thus better examine the pierced stone brackets, which have certainly all the appearance of wood from below; there are said to have been massy stone chains hanging from the angles, such as we have already seen at Peroor, and in other temples in the south, but these have entirely disappeared. At the back of the building is a small mosque, and it is from the court in which the mosque stands, that this view is taken. It represents the southern and western sides of the Mehter Mahal, showing its architecture and ornamentation more in detail.
