Interior of the Jami Masjid, Bijapur. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Arched interior of the prayer hall of the mosque. India Museum no. 1429. Received from Captain Lyon, 7 February 1871.
538. - On entering the building no one can fail to be struck by the magnificent arcade forming the body of the mosque. It is 257 ft long x 145 ft broad. The pillars are all equidistant, something more than 26 ft from centre to centre and elevated 25 ft. From them spring arches of the usual pointed shape common to musjids, which arches support a beautiful dome resting between every 4 pillars, but so flat, as to be concealed externally in the thickness of the roof. The floor, which is made of polished plaster, is divided into squares by black lines done by Aurungzib, when he carried away the velvet carpets and golden chains &c, belonging to the mosque.
