Genre: Architectural Photography
Looking towards the entrance to the chaitya hall (Cave 8), with the massive monolithic column with lion capital at the left. India Museum no. 1443 Received from Captain Lyon, 7 February 1871. Duplicate print at Photo 1001 (3201).
'552. - Arrived at the building shown on the right of the view No. 551 and mounting the stairs to the room over the door, the view of the cave as here shown is seen. Straight in front is the door at the entrance to the cave, the whole end is open forming one great window, through which all the light is admitted. This window is in the shape of a horse shoe, and within the arch is a frame work of teak wood, which like the ribs of the interior is coeval with the building. Outside the cave is a porch which is closed by a screen, composed of two stout plain octagonal pillars, supporting what is now a plain mass of rock, but was once ornamented by a wooden gallery, which formed the principal decoration of the façade, above this, the remains of the four columns are seen, the aperture between which admitted light to the great window, and above this again appears to have been another wooden ornament of some sort. In advance of this screen, stands the lion pillar on the left, it is a plain shaft with thirty two flutes supporting the remains of 4 lions. Another similar one probably stood opposite, but this has either fallen, or been taken down to make room for the building to be seen on the right.'
