Close view of carved stone pillar inside the Ambaranatha Temple, Ambarnath. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
India Museum no. 1449. Received from Captain Lyon, 7 February 1871.
'558. - Represents one of four pillars which support the roof of the building inside. Time and the weather even in the interior, seem to have been unusually destructive on this temple and more especially will this appear, if we compare it again with Hallabeed and Bailoor, both of which were built at the same epoch. Besides the four pillars which as here shown were most elaborate in their details though now terribly defaced, every portion of the interior is beautifully carved and the ceiling will even bear favorable comparison with that at Peroor, see Photograph 412. The temple is entirely deserted and can be examined without let or hindrance both inside and out, not a Brahmin nor even a native being ever to be found near the spot.
From Callian Bombay is reached in less than an hour and after no longer a stay here than necessary to send on tents, &c., &c. The traveller can start in the morning by the early train and will arrive at Surat about two o'clock though it is very doubtful whether there is anything at that place to make it worth his while to stop there.'
