Close view of carved work on Rani Sipri's Tomb, Ahmadabad. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
Close view of pierced stone windows and carved work on wall beneath. India Museum no. 1452. Received from Captain Lyon 7 February 1871.
561. - Shows in detail the outside of the tomb of the Ranee or Queen, who was the wife of the Sultan, the founder of the city It is entirely of stone, and the carving on its base is considered by many to be the best to be found here. The small squares pierced through to admit light to the interior, and fashioned into various patterns are here first met with, but will be found repeated in nearly every mosque and tomb throughout this city. The building was when photographed in 1869 full of hay, and appeared to have been so for some time. When a Queen's tomb is turned into a hay barn, may it not be truly said 'Mutatus mutandus omnia mutantur.'
