View from the court looking towards the iwan of the mosque, flanked by truncated minarets. India Museum no. 1469. Received from Captain Lyon 7 February 1871. Duplicate print at Photo 1001 (3226).
Lyon supplies the following description in his 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs designed to illustrate the ancient architecture of Western India. Taken for Government and described by Captain Lyon' (Geneva, 1871):
578. - At a short distance from the citadel, and quite close to the travellers bungalow is the mosque commonly known as the 'Roop Ranee'. It was built by a Queen called Rupavati who with another royal lady lies buried in an adjacent tomb, now fast going to decay. These monuments are adorned with sculptured censers arid triple chains, the concave of the dome is gorgeously fretted, and the pillars running quadrangularly form four open colonnades around the monuments.
The date of the mosque is probably A.D. 1430 to 1450, about the same as the Ranee Seepree, with which latter it alone contests the palm of being the most beautiful to be found here. This view shows the front of the mosque and is the form that has been most generally adopted throughout the city.
