Side view of mandapa of Hathi Singh's Temple, Ahmadabad. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Architectural Photography
India Museum no. 1481. Received from Captain Lyon 7 February 1871.
589 and 590. - Passing under the porch the view of the temple itself with the usual mandap in front is obtained. The coup d'oeil is quite spoilt by the many candelabra hanging from the ceiling and which are, except when occasionally lighted at night, kept tied up in red bags. The effect of the arches is exceedingly light and pleasing, though the figures carved on the capital of each pillar, give it somewhat of a heavy appearance, which is more observable in the angle view shown in 590 than in the front view as represented in 589.
The temple itself stands in the centre of a paved court, and is built on a raised platform about five ft high. It is all thickly covered with repeated coats of whitewash which is fast hiding the beautifully minute details of the carvings. As is the case in all Jain temples no one is allowed to pass the outer porch without removing their shoes and either putting on list slippers or going bare footed, nor is any European allowed with or without shoes to enter the Sanctum. The whole temple is dedicated to Dhurmanath one of the 24 deified mortals whom the Jains worship.
