My Indian Trophies. Photographer: Bourne and Shepherd
- Scope & Content:
-
Full-length portrait of Charles James Lucas (1853-1928), the compiler of this album, seated in front of his tent with a large collection of animal heads, in the garden of the Apcar's house in Calcutta. Lucas describes this photographic session in a diary letter to his parents: '27 Decr. Up at daylight & helped Rama pitch my tent in the Gardens ... Got tent pitched & skins heads etc arranged by about 9 o'ck & dressed myself up in the clothes I used to wear in Kashmir & had the whole blessed thing photo'd much to the amusement of all Apcar's servants who could not make me out a bit...' (Photo 1224/7, vol. 2, p. 204). The photographer is not identified, but is likely to have been an operator from the Bourne and Shepherd studio, since print 196 is certainly their work. See also print 197, taken on tha same occasion as this photograph.
