[Chinese] Priests. Photographer: Lai Afong
- Scope & Content:
-
Full-length studio portrait of a group of priests, with a table in the centre on which stand religious articles and a miniature statue of Buddha. With contemporary descriptive printed label: 'No. 42-Priests. And here are the priests. Dirty, ignorant, lazy rascals, without exception; but in China, just as everywhere else, those who are supposed to hold the keys of the next world, enjoy considerable influence. These fellows attend at marriages and funerals, in addition to performing the temple services. They tell fortunes, sell charms, and select lucky days for important transactions. Altogether, they contrive to coin native superstition into money, and that to no small extent. The intelligent observer will see 'humbug' legibly printed on each face submitted above for his inspection.'
