Canton was visited by the compiler of this album between 24th and 28th Februrary, 1879.
With contemporary printed descriptive label: 'This represents the saloon of one of these boats, they are magnificiently fitted up in marble. The small room at the back is where the Chinese smoke opium. For a small sum these boats can be hired and are largely patronised by foreign pleasure seekers'.
