Scope & Content:

General view of the Gang Scot (Jalan Budi Kemuliaan) a popular residential area for the well to do in the 1860s and 1870s. Named after an Englishman, Robert Scot, who was acting harbourmaster in Semarang before arriving in Batavia in 1820. Information from Scott Merrillees, Batavia in Nineteenth Century Photographs (Archipelago Press, Singapore, 2000), where this photograph is reproduced, p. 166.

Batavia (Jakarta) was visited by the compiler of this album between 3rd and 5th February 1879.
