'This photograph was taken from the bridge which connects what is now Jalan Asemka to Jalan Pintu Kecil and is looking in a southerly direction. Around the bend in the river on the left are the Toko Tiga and Pancoran areas. On the left-hand side, where houses stand on the edge of the river, the multi-storey Pasar Pagi market and car park are now situated.' (Scott Merrillees, Batavia in Nineteenth Century Photographs (Archipelago Press, Singapore, 2000), where this photograph is reproduced, p. 80).
Batavia (Jakarta) was visited by the compiler of this album between 3rd and 5th February 1879.
