Diary of George Eaton containing 9 drawings of Delhi buildings
- Scope & Content:
-
Mss Eur D512/1
9 drawings of Delhi buildings mounted in a journal.
By a Delhi artist, 1858.
All but one inscribed with titles in Persian characters.
Water-colour; various sizes; Indian ink rule border.
Note: Eaton arrived in Calcutta 8 June 1858 and was sent to Delhi for training with the 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers who were resting at Delhi after taking part in the seige and capture of the city. He left Delhi in January 1859. The present drawings were clearly purchased by him during his stay in Delhi. They show Delhi buildings in a realistic landscape setting with bright colouring. It is interesting to note that the Delhi painters quickly modified their stock sets in order to illustrate buildings that had figured in the Mutiny operations. Thus the Kashmir Gate is shown damaged, and Hindu Rao’s house, which had been held by the Gurkhas, is also drawn in ruins. St. James’s Church however is shown in good repair and Eaton comments in his journal that it had been quickly renovated.
