J.45,9-24
Sixteen designs for illustrations of an unidentified Sanskrit or Hindi text.
Commissioned by Richard Johnson, Lucknow, c.1780-82.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
‘Charbas’ with some colour in most cases; ten are of oblong format, many with corners reserved where text would have been; six are nearer to square shape and do not show reserved corners; it seems plausible that these are derived from illustrations to the same text although this cannot be verified; four (J.45, nos.14, 20, 23-4) correspond to tracings also in J.45, nos.26-30 and must have been made from them, but the other corresponding tracings do not survive in the Johnson Collection; J.45, nos.9-19 have been mounted by the Library on a single sheet of paper.
