A Mughal prince and his mistress
- Scope & Content:
-
A Mughal prince and mistress.
Oudh, c.1770-80.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
‘Charba’; mounted on paper.
160 by 93 mm; page 210 by 138 mm.
A Mughal prince is seated beneath a canopy dallying with a lady who lies with her head across his lap; refreshments are spread before them and a girl kneels to offer a dish from which the prince has taken a cup of wine; another girl stands on the left with a fan. Angels fly above, two of them holding a balance, the heavier weight of which is provided by the halo of the prince.
Note: This drawing relates to a miniature by Mihr Chand (reproduced Mehta (1926), pl.46), but the composition is more typical of seventeenth-century Mughal painting and would therefore appear to derive from an earlier original.
