Two girls entertaining a ruler, possibly Nawab Muzaffar Jang of Farrukhabad
- Scope & Content:

Two girls entertaining a ruler.
Farrukhabad, c.1775.
Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807.
Gouache; on an album page with plain and coloured borders sprinkled with gold.
173 by 101 mm; page 513 by 380 mm.
Two girls, one with a ‘tambur’, the other dancing, entertain a ruler dressed in white who is sitting amongst cushions beneath a canopy at night. There is an open gate in the foreground.
Note: The ruler is probably Diler Himmat Khan, who succeeded Ahmad Khan Bangash as Nawab of Farrukhabad in 1771 with the title of Muzaffar Jang. His drooping moustache is in keeping with the style current at Faizabad and Lucknow, where Shuja‘ al-Daula wore a moustache of similar cut.
