Letter from Queen Victoria, Osborne House
- Scope & Content:
-
Thanks Lord Canning for his interesting letter of 3 Jul, she is always glad to hear about India. All that Lord Canning tells her is satisfactory, though as he truly says, no-one can prophesy for 24 hours that peace will not be disturbed. The Queen fears that the occupation of Herat by the Persians will lead to serious complications, and probably to war. The Queen of Oudh arrived at Southampton to begin her injudicious visit to England on 20 Aug, Queen Victoria hopes to see her. Her Majesty is glad to hear so good an account of Prince Gholam, and of Lord Canning's intention to make him a member of the Senate of the University. She is delighted to hear that Lady Canning, who is greatly missed in England, is in good health. The Queen and the Prince leave for Scotland on 27 Aug, they have just returned from a very unsuccessful cruise, for the sea was so rough that the Queen has not yet recovered from seasickness.
