Six letters from Queen Victoria to Charles Canning, Aug 1856 - Sep 1861, with copies of twelve replies from Charles Canning to Queen Victoria, Jul 1856 - Dec 1861. Also three letters to Lord de Tabley, written on behalf of Queen Victoria, Aug 1862 - Mar 1863 regarding possible return of her letters and permission to publish extracts from them.
The letters span the period of Charles Canning's service in India. They include reference to his early impression of the precarious nature of peace in India; information regarding the Indian Mutiny, including the relief of Lucknow and the engagement at Cawnpore; includes the views of the Queen and Lord Canning on 'the spirit of bitter revenge' shown by many English people towards Indians, and the Queen's support of Canning; includes details of the Queen's Proclamation of 1858; details Canning's progress through India in order to grant honours including the Order of British India, the Order of Merit and the new order of chivalry, the Star of India and describes receptions with various Princes and Chiefs of India; also includes a description by Lord Canning of Charlotte Canning's illness and death.
