Letter from Queen Victoria, Windsor Castle
- Scope & Content:
-
Thanks Lord Canning for his letter, written when he was not aware of the fall of Delhi. News of this has reached the Queen though without any details; news of the fate of Lucknow is awaited with intense anxiety. The Queen entirely shares Lord Canning's feelings of sorrow and indignation at the spirit shown by the public towards Indians and sepoys indiscriminately. It comes from the horror inspired by the atrocities; for the guilty parties no punishment can be severe enough. The greatest kindness should be shown to the friendly natives, who have helped fugitives; they should know that there is no hatred of a brown skin, and that their Queen wishes to see them flourishing. She is delighted to hear such good accounts of Sir Colin Campbell. The Queen hopes that Lord Canning will not mind the abusive articles in the Press, but recollect how harmless they are to those who have done their duty. She thanks Lord Canning for the map he sent. The Prince, the Queen, and the Royal children send their good wishes to Lord and Lady Canning.
