Copy of letter from Lord Canning to Queen Victoria
- Scope & Content:

Comments at length on the King of Oudh and his family's visit to England. He presumes that the King's family intend to ask for the restoration of Oudh. Remarks on the Mission sent by the King of Ava to France, which was encouraged and accompanied by a French adventurer calling himself General D'Orgoni, his real name being Girodon. The King of Ava was also to send a Mission to the United States, but was dissuaded by an American missionary who told him that the United States Government would probably be embarrassed as they could not send a return Mission without first asking permission from the British Government whose territory must be crossed to reach Ava. Lord Canning does not foresee trouble with Ava, but the news from the west, from Persia, is ominous. It is rumoured that Dost Mahomed is on his deathbed; should he die, Afghanistan would collapse into anarchy for many years. No-one can prophesy peace for India for 24 hours ahead. It is impossible to appreciate outside India, the very precarious tenure by which peace is kept. Already there have been 2 small incidents, the Sonthal raid, and the rising in Goomsoor. Comments on Prince Gholam Mahommed, whom Lord Canning intends to make a member of the Senate of the new University.
