Thanks the Queen for her letter; he read with great pleasure the Queen's words upon the spirit of bitter revenge which imbues many Englishmen against the Indians. He is grateful for Her Majesty's kind reference to the newspaper attacks on himself; his indifference to the attack is so complete as to surprise himself. Comments on the Relief of Lucknow, and an engagement at Cawnpore. Sends a plan of the engagement at Cawnpore (not enclosed). Discusses Sir Colin Campbell's future campaign. An auxiliary force from Nepal of 9,000 men under Jung Bahadoor is about to cross the frontier. Comments on the loss of Sir Henry Havelock and Brigadier General Neill.
