Describes his receptions in Her Majesty's name of the Princes and Chiefs of India, with descriptions of the people received. The first reception was at Lucknow, of the Royal Family and Talookdars of Oudh followed by the Bundelcund chiefs, and those from west of the Ganges and the Jumna, from Rohilcund, from Central India and Rajpootana from the Cis-Sutlej States, the Sirdars of the Punjab, the chiefs of the North West Frontier, the Maharajah of Cashmere, and the Hill Chiefs. Canning would have reported these events sooner, but he has been compelled to leave Simla for Calcutta, because of the failure of Sir James Outram's health. Informs the Queen that Lady Canning remained at Simla, intending to journey towards the Tibet frontier and to spend 5 or 6 weeks in the further ranges of the Himalayas.
