Thanks the Queen for her letter, and for her gracious words about his services. He accepts with much pleasure the Rangership of the Park and the Ranger's House at Blackheath. He fears the Queen may think he has been remiss in writing; but for the past l ½ years the work of the Government of India has been almost confined to two objects, reduction of expenditure, and reduction and consolidation of the Armies. The work has been difficult and tedious, and the results slow to appear. Comments on both these matters. The Governor General leaves Calcutta on 23 Oct for the Investiture of the Order of the Star of India, for those of the Knights whose territories are not more than 400 miles distant. Informs the Queen that Lady Canning is on a visit to the Eastern Himalayas. She has heard of the bestowal of the Rangership with great delight.
