Enclosures nos. 2-3 to a dispatch from the Secret Department, Government of Bombay, dated 30 June 1848. The enclosures are dated 9-28 April 1848.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence from the Political Agent in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq] relating to affairs in Baghdad, including:
- The appointment of a Nazir [Superintendent] of all Russian subjects in Baghdad, at the request of the Russian Minister at Constantinople [Istanbul], and a suggestion that certain Russian passports being used in Baghdad may not be valid
- A concern that Georgian pilgrims in the region may be being discriminated against
- Ratification of the 1847 Treaty of Erzeroom [Erzurum] between the Ottoman Empire and Persia [Iran], and the refusal by Nejib Pasha [Muḥammad Najīb Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad] to alter his dealings with Persian officials until directly ordered
- The arrest of a man in Baghdad for apostasy, and a concern that he may be killed or harmed while on his way to Constantinople for trial
- A complaint by the Political Agent over the arrest of one of his servants.
