‘ENCLOSURES TO SECRET LETTERS FROM BOMBAY’, Vol 93

Scope & Content:

The volume consists of copies of Enclosures to Despatches to the East India Company Secret Committee from the Government of Bombay Secret Department, dated 20 May-19 July 1848. The despatches themselves are not included in the volume.

The enclosures relate to various events in Aden, British India, Persia [Iran] and Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]. The volume is divided into the following items:

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 560; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers. The sequence contains two foliation anomalies: f 1a and f 210a.

Arrangement:

The enclosures to each despatch within the volume (each item) are divided by blue dividers. The sets of enclosures to despatches are arranged in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The enclosures within each despatch are given a number, which is recorded for reference on the verso of the last folio of each enclosure, along with the original reference, and a description of each enclosure. The despatch itself (not included) is numbered 1, the abstract of contents listing the enclosures is numbered 2, and the enclosures 3, 4, etc.
