Enclosures nos. 1-2 to a despatch from the Secret Department, Government of Bombay. The enclosures are dated 12-17 November 1842.
The enclosures contain English and Hindi copies of an address by the Governor-General of India ‘to the Princes and people of India’ about the ‘recovery’ from the tomb of Sultaun Mahmood of Ghuznee [Maḥmūd of Ghazni, Sultan of the Ghaznavid Empire], during the British retreat from Afghanistan at the end of the First Anglo-Afghan War, of a pair of carved wooden gates believed to have been plundered by Mahmood from the temple of Somnath in 1026, and plans for their restoration to the temple. The enclosures also contain a letter from the Governor-General to HH Syajee Rao Guikwar [Sayaji Rao Gaekwad II, Maharaja of Baroda] on the same subject.
