The volume consists of Enclosures to Despatches to the East India Company Secret Committee from the Government of Bombay Secret Department, dated 30 November-31 December 1842. The despatches themselves are not included in the volume.
The enclosures relate to various events in Aden, Afghanistan, British India, China, Persia [Iran], the Persian Gulf, and Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]. The volume is divided into the following items:

- The sets of enclosures to despatches are arranged in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The enclosures within each despatch are given a number, which is recorded for reference on the verso of the last folio of each enclosure, along with the original reference, and a description of each enclosure. In most items the despatch itself (not included) is numbered 1, the abstract of contents listing the enclosures is numbered 2, and the enclosures 3, 4, etc.
