- Title:
- Recovery of Gates Believed to Have Been Plundered from the Temple of Somnath
- Scope & Content:
-
Unnumbered enclosures to a despatch from the Secret Department, Government of Bombay, dated 31 December 1842. The enclosures are dated 10 November-27 December 1842.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence relating to the ‘recovery’ from the tomb of Sultaun Mahmood of Ghuznee [Maḥmūd of Ghazni, Sultan of the Ghaznavid Empire], during the British retreat from Afghanistan at the end of the First Anglo-Afghan War, of a pair of carved wooden gates believed to have been plundered by Mahmood from the temple of Somnath (also written as Somnauth in the item) in 1026, and plans for their restoration to the temple.
The correspondence includes English and Hindi copies of an address by the Governor-General of India ‘to the Princes and people of India’ about the gates, and also covers:
- Arrangements for the transport of the gates to Somnath, accompanied by soldiers ‘present at the capture of Ghuznee’
- An assessment that the gates would ‘soon fall to pieces’ if put up as gates, and would be better preserved as relics ‘on an elevated platform’
- A request for Residents, Agents and other British officials across India to give ‘the fullest publicity’ to the ‘restoration’
- A report by the Political Agent, Kattywar [Kathiawar], into the condition and management of the temple, stating that the building now standing is no longer used as a temple and may not be the same building as that from which the gates were taken.
The primary correspondent is the Government of India.
