Enclosures to a despatch from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the Secret Committee, Number 29 of 1847, dated 15 March 1847. The enclosures are dated 10 September 1846 to 17 March 1847 and contain correspondence relating to: the aftermath of the battles of Meeanee [Miyani, also written as Miani in the item] and Hyderabad in early 1843, bringing down the majority of the former rulers of Sinde [Sindh, also written here as Scinde], the Ameers [amīrs] of Talpur, allies of Qajar Persia [Iran]; alterations to the ‘Mogul [Mughal] Tower’ and other areas of Surat Castle as temporary residences, the hire of local contractors for construction, estimates of costs, and correspondence on their approval.
Correspondents mainly include: Governor-General of India; Secretary to the Government of India; Secretary to the Government of Sinde; Acting Agent for the Governor of Bombay at Surat; Superintendent of the Indian Navy; the Military Board; Adjutant General of the Army; Political Agent at Aden; and HM Consul and Company Agent at Zanzibar.
There is a note in red ink on folio 24, dated 30 October 1906, indicating enclosures 79-80 to eighty are missing.
Folio 76 comprises the foldout of a tinted map with key and orientation, lacking dimensions, showing the course of the river near the village of Kotmeer [Kot Mir Muhammad Khan (?)] on the road to Hydrabad [Hyderabad] and the southward passage of the East India Company’s Steamers Comet, Nimrod, and Meteor.
