- Title:
- Map Showing the Passage of EIC Steamers Comet, Nimrod, and Meteor During the Battle of Hyderabad
- Scope & Content:
-
This item comprises the foldout of an untitled copy of a tinted map with a key and orientation, but lacking dimensions. It shows the course of the river near the village of Kotmeer [Kot Mir Muhammad Khan?] on the road to Hydrabad [Hyderabad] and the southward passage of the East India Company’s Steamers Comet, Nimrod, and Meteor.
The context of the map is explained in a letter (folio 73) from Captain Sir R Oliver, Royal Navy, Superintendent of the Indian Navy, addressed to L R Reid, President and Governor in Council, Bombay, dated 28 November 1846. It states that the present copy duplicates a map originally sent as an enclosure to a letter from Captain A H Nott, Commander of the Indus Flotilla, sent 12 January [1846], that was apparently mislaid in the office. Captain Nott’s letters of appeal (reproduced on folios 73-75) requested reconsideration for the claim of the officers and crew of the steam vessels Comet, Meteor, Nimrod, and the Government Flat Boat, to receive medals for the Battle of Hyderabad (early 1843). The debarring of officers and crew from the award of medals was attributed to an omission by Captain Nott to inform Captain Sir R Oliver of the names of any of the vessels comprising the Flotilla engaged in operations in Scinde [Sindh]. The present copy of the map was drawn and annotated by the scribe, M S Gonsalves, who left a signature in the bottom left corner.
