- Title:
- Aerial view of Boyden Observatory and surroundings.
- Scope & Content:
-
An early aerial view of Boyden Observatory koppie, seen from the north-west. In the foreground is the access road up the slope of the koppie; lower down, other tracks can be seen. The location of the hostel and cottages is at bottom left; no structures are visible. Near the left-centre of the image, behind the hill rise, five structures can be seen. The Modder River (and a tributary from the south) is prominent in the left half of the image. The garage has a side building to its north. The trees planted north of the Administrative Building are very small. South of the building a Stevenson screen is in place. The trees planted between the Administrative Building and the telescopes, and in the southern part of the site, are small. This image was probably taken after PLB36_0001 but before LSB04_0008. Printed label: "HARVARD COLLEGE OBSERVATORY.". Hand written: "AIR VIEW of HARVARD KOPJE / 14 [circled]". A silver star-shaped sticker is attached to the label. PLB33_0001 and LSB04_0015 are from the same original. This image is found in AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, Niels Bohr Library & Archives 299700, where it is given a date of approximately 1936.
