Political Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 19 of 1871, dated 25 January 1871, containing enclosures (only enclosures 19-27 listed in the abstract of contents are present in this item).
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence regarding the recent grain ‘riots’ at Bushire [Bushehr], including: discrepancies between the accounts given by the British Minister at Teheran [Tehran], Charles Alison, and the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly; and the amount of indemnity which should be paid to British subjects for wheat which they were prohibited from exporting, and which they were compelled to make over to the Persian [Iranian] authorities due to the scarcity of wheat.
The primary correspondents in enclosures 19-27 are the Government of Bombay and the Government of India. The item also includes enclosed letters from: the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly and the Uncovenanted Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf, James Charles Edwards; Messrs A, A J and T J [Arratoon, Arsham J, and Tigranes Joseph] Malcolm, Bushire; Mirza Mahomed Khan [Mīrzā Muḥammad Khān], Persian Foreign Agent, Bushire; and the Native Agent at Shiraz.
The despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 27 February 1871, and a copy was sent to the Foreign Office on 10 September 1872.
