Political Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 20 of 1871, dated 25 January 1871, containing enclosures dated 28 January-5 February 1871.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence relating to affairs at Muscat and in the Persian Gulf, including news reports: from the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, reporting on affairs in Oman, Bahrein [Bahrain], Guttur [Qatar], the Wahabee [Wahhābī] territory, and Persia [Iran]; and from the Acting Political Agent and Consul at Muscat, Major Alfred Cotton Way, reporting on affairs at Oman. The news reported by Pelly includes: Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd] leaving Soor [Sur] with a force for the purpose of attacking Syud Azam [Sayyid ‘Azzān bin Qays Āl Bū Sa‘īd] at Muscat; the commander of the Hugh Rose being instructed to take steps for stopping the approach of armed men by sea against Muscat; and the Government of Muscat being asked to make arrangements to secure the safety of British subjects there.
Other correspondents are the Government of Bombay, and the Political Agent and Consul at Zanzibar, Henry Adrian Churchill.
The despatch was received by the India Office Secret Department on 27 February 1871.
