Secret Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 27 of 1871, dated 23 May 1871, containing enclosures dated 23 February-23 May 1871.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence relating to questions which have arisen in connection with the accession of Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd] to power in Muscat. The questions concern: whether Syud Toorkee should be recognised by the British Government; what answer should be given to his request for the intervention of the British Government to procure for him the lease of Bunder Abbas [Bandar Abbas]; the payment of the Zanzibar subsidy; and his request to send fifty armed men to Sohar by sea for the purpose of taking possession of it.
The primary correspondents are the Government of India Foreign Department and the Secretary to the Government of Bombay Political Department. Other correspondents in further enclosures include: the Political Resident in Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly; the Acting Political Agent at Muscat, Major Alfred Cotton Way; and Syud Toorkee.
The despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 28 June 1871.
