Secret Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 34 of 1871, dated 23 June 1871, containing enclosures dated 20 May-16 June 1871.
The enclosures relate to Muscat affairs, including: the position of Syud Toorkee bin Saeed [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], and his recognition as Ruler of Muscat by the Viceroy and Governor-General of India in Council; and the Zanzibar subsidy and the lease of Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ‘Abbas].
The enclosures consist of correspondence by letter and telegram between the Government of Bombay Political Department and the Government of India Foreign Department. Correspondence from the Government of Bombay Political Department includes: letters from the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly; news reports from the Political Agent at Muscat, Major Edward Charles Ross, and the Acting Political Agent at Muscat, Major Alfred Cotton Way; and translated purports of letters from Syud Toorkee to Pelly.
The despatch was received by the India Office Secret Department on 26 July 1871.
