Political Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 87 of 1873, dated 9 June 1873, containing enclosures dated 1 February to 9 June 1873.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence and memoranda concerning affairs in Muscat and Zanzibar. Several matters are covered, including:
- The mission of HM Special Envoy to Zanzibar and Muscat, Henry Bartle Edward Frere, to negotiate agreements with the sultans of Muscat and Zanzibar for the suppression of the trade in enslaved people
- The payment of the subsidy due to the Sultan of Muscat from the Sultan of Zanzibar
- How the money for the subsidy is to be recovered from the Sultan of Zanzibar and which government (London or India) is responsible should it not be possible to do so
- A request from Salem bin Syed Sowanee [Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd], former Sultan of Muscat, for financial assistance from the British.
Additional correspondents include: Toorkee bin Saeed [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Sultan of Muscat; Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Charles Ross, Acting Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Captain Samuel Barrett Miles, Acting Political Agent at Muscat.
The despatch was received by the India Office Secret Department on 15 July 1873.
