Secret Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 58 of 1873, dated 16 June 1873, containing enclosures dated from 15 November 1872 to 13 June 1873.
The enclosures consist of copies of correspondence and memoranda concerning the connection of British Indian [South Asian] subjects in East Africa with the trade in enslaved people. The papers discuss the alleged financial involvement and what legal power there is to end and prevent such involvement.
Principal correspondents include: the Government of Bombay; the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Officiating Advocate-General of India; and HM Special Envoy to Zanzibar and Muscat.
The despatch was received by the India Office Secret Department on 19 July 1873.
