This item is a collection to Bombay Political Despatch Volume 25 of 23 May 1859, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of Bombay Political Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay’s Political Despatch No. 32 of 20 October 1859 to the Secretary of State for India. It comprises correspondence from the Resident in the Persian Gulf to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, relating to the proceedings of Commodore Griffith Jenkins, the Commander of the Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf, deputed to Muscat by the Resident in the Persian Gulf to bring about an amicable settlement between the ‘chiefs’ of Zanzibar and Muscat. This was prompted by a report that the Imaum [Imām] of Muscat had departed for the shores of Africa, accompanied by several war vessels and an armed retinue. The task of arranging a settlement was later given to the British Agent at Muscat.
Correspondents include: the Resident, Persian Gulf; the Secretary to the Government of Bombay; the Commander-in-Chief, Indian Navy; HM Consul in Muscat; the British Agent at Muscat; the Commander of the Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf; and the Special British Commissioner to the Imaum of Muscat.
