- Title:
- [Gurkha Gate, Simla (Shimla). The main gate to the Viceregal Lodge (now named Rashtrapati Niwas), at Simla.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- View of the Gurkha Gate, Simla (Shimla). The main gate to the Viceregal Lodge (now named Rashtrapati Niwas), at Simla. Construction of the lodge began in 1880 under Lord Ripon and was completed in 1888 under Lord Dufferin. The gate’s construction date is less certain, although no later than 1899, the year the photographer left India. The upper stories of the houses on either side of the gate served as accommodation for the guards. George Curzon, Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905, notes in a letter (1 May 1901) to his wife, Mary Curzon, the presence of "...Gurkhas at Gate this year... ." Sir Edward John Buck’s 1904 monograph “Simla, Past and Present” describes the architectural style of the lodge as “English Renaissance.” The gate, in contrast, appears to be built in a traditional Indian Himalayan style using “dhajji” construction. Dhajji construction employs a matrix of small wooden members filled with mortared masonry – a material-efficient sort of half-timber construction - and is well suited to earthquake-prone regions. The gate continues to guard the main road to the Rashtrapati Niwas which is now occupied by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and is a major Shimla tourist attraction.
