- Title:
- [Joseph Gaye's wife Mary (1860-1948) with their children and staff outside their bungalow in Simla (Shimla).] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- View of a woman with children and staff outside a bungalow in Simla (Shimla). The woman is Joseph Gaye's wife Mary (1860-1948). The children from left to right are Herbert Victor (1894-1954) (with a stroller), Arthur Nepal (1888-1959), Edith Marian (1896-1996) (in the arms of a staff member) and Ernest (1891-1917) (in a rickshaw). Mary and Joseph Gaye were married in Jhelum, India, in 1882, but moved to Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1888 when Gaye was retained as the bandmaster to the Royal Nepalese Army. In 1892, after accepting the position of bandmaster to the Viceroy of India, Gaye and his family moved to Simla. Gaye would move between Calcutta (Kolkata) and Simla while his family remained in Simla. Simla became popular with Europeans in the early 19th century as the climate was agreeable to the British. The small Indian settlement developed into a European-style town with designated areas for the native population. In 1863 the Viceroy of India declared Simla the summer capital of the British Raj. The government now moved seasonally between the winter capital of Calcutta and the remote northern hill town 1,600 kilometres away, until 1939 when New Delhi became the year-round capital.
